studiomem had the opportunity to support EnbW-SENEC, one of Germany's pioneers in Photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Electric Storage Systems (BESS), in designing a more customer-centric offer. As part of an extensive re-design of their consumer-app and -portal we invested extra-effort into clarifying and improving the functionality of the app's MONITOR function.

PV-system buyers have made a proactive choice to "fully own" their energy consumption and expenditures.
In this rapidly maturing market, consumers are getting familiar with generating energy on the roofs of single family homes, on appartment balconies - even on camper vans, trailers and tents. The information that users obsess about most is usually made available in a detailed and customiseable dashboard that displays current- or past-power generation and flow. This MONITOR is so central to user's understanding of usage and autonomy that together with SENEC's design and experience team we decided to invest indepth effort into researching, co-creating and re-designing it with a selected group of voluntary users.

As users become more and more attuned to generating and consuming their home-made power, they pay accute attention to

 

  • when and where power flows

  • how power can be immediately consumed rather than sent back into the grid for a unlucrative financial return

  • how the forecasted weather and availability of sunlight affect planned usage of power-hungry appliances​

SOLUTION: MAXIMISED MONITOR

In response to insights and suggestions harvested from a series of user interviews and co-creation sessions, we designed a more granular and more customiseable view of

​

  • energy-flow parameters (8 - previously 4 )

  • easy-to-adjust time range ( range from 1 hour to 1 year)

  • improved insight cards informing on efficiency and savings

  • improved visual separation of the individual parameters
